Electronics is the category where an AI assistant is most likely to refuse to recommend you — not because your product is worse, but because the question a shopper asks is almost always a compatibility question, and compatibility is a fact, not a vibe. “Will this charger work with my laptop?” has a right answer. If your product data does not contain it, a careful model will recommend the listing that does.
The nine general signals all still apply. What changes for tech is which ones decide the outcome.
Compatibility is the whole game
Write compatibility down explicitly, in text, using the names shoppers use. Not “universal fit” — the specific devices, ports, standards and versions:
- Named devices and generations. “Fits iPhone 15 and 15 Pro” beats “fits most modern phones”. A model can match the former to a question; it cannot safely infer the latter.
- Standards and versions. USB-C vs USB-C with Thunderbolt, Wi-Fi generation, Bluetooth version, HDMI version, wattage supported. These are the terms that appear verbatim in shopper questions.
- What it does not fit. Counter-intuitive, but stating a limitation makes the rest of your data more credible — and it prevents the returns that come from an assistant guessing optimistically on your behalf.
Specs belong in metafields, not only in a spec table image
Tech catalogs love a nicely designed specifications graphic. It is invisible to a text reader. Capacity, dimensions, weight, power draw, battery life, resolution, refresh rate, material — put them in Shopify’s category metafields so they exist as labeled facts, and repeat the two or three that decide purchases in the description as plain sentences.
If you only do one thing from this article: set the most specific Shopify taxonomy category for each product, then fill the attribute fields it unlocks. For electronics those attributes map almost one-to-one onto the questions shoppers ask.
Model numbers and identifiers matter more here than anywhere
Tech shoppers search by model number, and so do assistants trying to confirm which exact item you are selling. Fill in the barcode field (GTIN/EAN/UPC) and put the manufacturer part number in the product data where you can. For a reseller this is straightforward and non-negotiable: without an identifier, your listing of a known product is indistinguishable from a vague clone of it, and the model has no way to tell which one it is looking at.
For own-brand hardware, invent nothing — but do publish a consistent model designation and use it identically across the title, description and any documentation. Consistency is itself a trust signal.
Bundles and kits: say what is in the box
“Starter kit” tells a model nothing. List the contents: cable lengths, adapter count, whether a power supply is included, whether the mount is in the box. A large share of electronics questions are really what-do-I-also-need questions, and the listing that answers them completely is the one that gets recommended for the whole job rather than one part of it.
Certifications, safety and warranty
For anything that draws power, certification and warranty details are trust signals a model will use when it has to choose between two similar products. Relevant safety certifications, warranty length, and whether support is available in the shopper’s region are all worth a line each. State only what is true and current — an outdated warranty claim is worse than none.
Priority order for a tech catalog
- Category set to the most specific taxonomy node, with its attribute metafields filled.
- Explicit compatibility in the description, using device and standard names.
- Barcode / model number populated on every variant.
- Box contents listed for bundles and kits.
- Real images of ports, connectors and included items — an assistant reading a product multimodally gets more from a photo of the actual connector than from a stylized hero shot.
Do those five and you have closed most of the gap that makes an assistant hedge — which is usually the real reason it recommends someone else.
